How to Use, Reuse, and Dispose of Face Masks

1

As the world is struggling to contain coronavirus, face masks are essential protective tools that can save you from getting infected. However, the world is experiencing a shortage of face masks due to the pandemic. Therefore, you should know how to disinfect, reuse, and discard this biohazard commodity in addition to practicing hand hygiene. Here are the tips on how to use the essential commodity properly.

How to Use a Face Mask Properly

You can use a cloth or surgical mask depending on the danger of infection. Cloth masks are recommended for the general public, and they are not ideal for healthcare workers who are dealing with infected patients. Healthcare and frontline workers should use surgical masks at all times as they are useful in blocking particle droplets.

How to Dispose of Used Masks

Since the virus can survive for a few hours when left exposed, used masks should be disposed of carefully. They should not be disposed of indiscriminately in open dust bins, homes, or workplaces because they pose a risk of infection.

Cloth masks should be adequately washed and dried in the open while surgical masks should be wrapped in polythene bag or tissue paper and immediately discarded in the yellow waste bag.

Reusing Face Masks

Cloth masks can be disinfected, dried, and reused, while surgical masks should not be reused if infected persons wore them.

Final Thought

Face masks have become an essential commodity as the world is fighting coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, it is essential to use them properly to protect yourself from infection.
