COVID-19, which is caused by a coronavirus, is passed on from one person to another via contaminated surfaces and respiratory droplets. Thus, properly using face masks helps to prevent it from spreading.

Who Should Wear Masks?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that given the shortage of masks, only people who are sick or caring for the sick must wear one.

Can We Reuse?

Reusing masks is not ideal. Throwing them after a single use would still be the best.

However, due to the shortage of supply and the health risk, COVID-19 brings, we can reuse masks but with utmost caution.

Things to Consider When Reusing Masks

• Carefully put on and take off masks to avoid self-contamination

Thoroughly wash hands before putting on a mask before removing it, and after taking it off.

The CDC reminds us that after using a mask, the front part is already contaminated; thus, we should hold the bottom ties or elastics and remove it without touching the front portion.

• Properly wash and disinfect cloth masks every after use

Those using cloth masks must wash them after each use. Unlike surgical face masks or N95 masks, these types of masks can only offer a marginal level of protection and be our last resort.

• Put another layer on top of a reused mask

Add layers to your mask using a scarf or tissue paper to protect yourself from foreign objects and to safeguard your mask from being soiled by droplets.

• Know when to stop reusing a mask

WHO instructs us to throw away a damp or soiled mask.

Final Thoughts

Using and reusing masks are not our only option to halt the spread of COVID-19. We must also regularly wash hands with soap and water, disinfect our houses, practice social distancing, stay at home, and avoid touching our faces.
