3 Common and Most Effective Ways to Dispose Biohazard Waste

4
The world is grappling with the issue of safe medical disposal. This issue is mainly caused by industrialization and growth in population. Of all health care waste generated, 20% is biohazard wastes.

Biohazard wastes can be toxic, infectious or radioactive and require proper disposal. Otherwise, these wastes can cause irreparable damage to both human health and the environment.

Though guidelines are being made to handle hazardous medical waste, there is still need to do more. Health facilities need to adopt proper waste disposal methods to properly dispose biohazard waste.

Below are just some of the most common and effective waste disposal methods for disposing biohazard waste today.

1.    Autoclaving

Autoclaving is an effective method for dealing with biohazard waste. This method uses a heated container to destroy biohazard waste.

2.    Encapsulation

Some biohazard wastes like sharps need to be treated with extra precaution to avoid the risk of infection. For sharp medical materials like syringes and scalpels, encapsulation is necessary.

These materials are encapsulated in a puncture resistant container that is properly labeled.
The container is then placed in a designated spot waiting to be deposited in a landfill.

3.    Chemical Disinfection

Chemical disinfection is a commonly used method for different types of biohazard wastes like solid animal wastes. After the wastes have been disinfected, they are then deposited in the landfill. The purpose of chemical disinfection is to lower the risk of spreading infections.

Conclusion

With the impact of biohazard waste to the environment and human health, proper disposal is vital. The above methods are effective for properly disposing these hospital wastes.
